Anthony Koutoulis has served on the Council since January 2009, after being elected by the academic staff. He is the Head of the School of Plant Science and Bachelor of Biotechnology degree coordinator at UTAS.
Anthony was born is Melbourne and educated at Moreland High School and St Michael’s Grammar School before completing his BSc(Hons) and PhD in the School of Botany at the University of Melbourne. He performed post-doctoral research in the School of Botany at the University of Adelaide and the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research in Massachusetts, USA. He started his academic position at UTAS as a Lecturer in Plant Science in 1996 and has been Head of Plant Science since 2004.
Anthony is passionate about teaching and research. He has received a number of teaching awards and teaching grants from UTAS and attracted research funding from the Australian Research Council, Horticulture Australia Limited and Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research. He has successfully supervised PhD and Honours students to completion, published his research in internationally peer-reviewed journals and given talks at national and international conferences. His areas of interest include cell and molecular biology, plant breeding, genetics, marine biology and biotechnology.
Anthony is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has served on numerous Faculty and university-wide committees at UTAS. He chairs the Tasmanian branch of AusBiotech, serves on the Tasmanian Science & Technology Council as well as the Tasmanian Biotechnology Network and has served on the board of Early Years Parents & Friends. Anthony considers that the higher education sector is a key driver in the knowledge economy, as is keen to work effectively across academia, industry and government for the future benefit of Tasmania. He welcomes the opportunity to serve on University Council to improve the overall performance of UTAS.
Anthony is married to Lisa and they have two young children, Sam and Max. |
